All wood is flattened, jointed, surfaced, and sanded through the grits up to 320 after a grain raise. I fill all knots or cracks with tinted resin and seal the entire piece with several coats of a non-toxic satin hard wax/ oil clear that penetrates deep into the wood protecting the surface from within and providing excellent liquid and abrasion resistance. It will not shrink, crack, peel or flake and molecularly bonds to the wood for a durable and natural finish. It is also very resistant to common spills such as water, juice, tea, soda and wine and lends itself beautifully to spot repair as opposed to a full sand down and refinish. All pieces are smooth as silk and I do much of my work by feel to decide if it is "completed" or not.
All of the wood that I use is sustainably-sourced and acquired for any number of my Pacific Northwest contacts that I have developed relationships with over the years. All material used is either kiln dried or properly air dried for years to get it down to an industry-preferred moisture content level to help prevent instability in the way of cracking and twisting. Wood is a natural thing and may move a tiny bit as temperatures go from one extreme to another, but the extra efforts that are taken here should minimize it a great deal.
Yes! I will deliver for free anywhere within a 60 square mile radius of my shop and extend that further for an additional fee. I will ship anywhere in the US or Canada via a crate/ freight service. The table top will be pre-drilled and marked. The table will ship with the legs flat in the same crate. Screws will be provided to simply screw into the pre-existing holes upon arrival. Freight can be expensive, but reach out to me for a quote.
Rectangle is the quintessential shape for dining tables. My tables are 36" wide and a standard 30" tall. When considering guests and chair spacing, it is common practice to allow around 24" for each chair. That said, a table that seats four should be about 48" to 60" long. To seat six people, look for a table that is at least 72" long. For eight guests, your table should be at least 84" to 96" long. You will have to factor in whether guests will sit on the ends or not. This not a hard and fast rule, but I wanted to provide some guidance in this area.
This boils down to aesthetic preference and price. I love to work with live edge slabs, but things to note are... They are much more difficult to flatten/surface, they are much more expensive to buy/ in fewer supply and can be harder to source the right slab to fulfill the size needs. The natural flow of the slabs can really prove stunning, but the cost is higher. Dimensional lumber is much more readily available and is much more consistent in the way of exact measurements. To explain book matched slabs, imagine a log that gets filleted laterally with a mill and you opened up one slab off of the next one down like a book... The grain figuring, size and similarities will show up almost like a mirror image of one another. Most of the larger slab tables that I do will feature some book matching to keep costs down. Single slabs in dining table sizes can be astronomical!
The best place to see past pieces that I have built would be on our website under the "past works" tab or Instagram or on our Instagram. In an effort to keep prices down and therefore overhead low, I typically don't have multiple tables "ready-made" to come and view as I operate in a smaller shop space and build to order.
YES! I love custom work and that is what I have cut my teeth on. If you are willing to work together on designs and are open to all of the potential options that are available, I would love to build your custom one-off piece. This would entail me providing a custom quote, but you can get at least some sense of what you are looking at just looking at my standard pricing then going up from there. I created this site to offer pieces to customers on a shorter lead time and to streamline designs a bit for greater ease of ordering. Providing clarity and set options will hopefully facilitate the entire process. I require a 50% deposit on all custom orders and the rest upon completion.
I have admired Madeway Design's work for years and in my opinion, they offer some of the strongest, most sleek designs out there for table legs. I thought it best to work with a local PNW company to provide the best product that I can and leave the welding to the experts, so that i can put 110% of my focus on the design and woodworking details.
Because of the custom nature of this business and because I build each piece to order, I do not accept returns aside from pieces that arrive damaged or in error of the initial order. I am happy to send reference and progress photos along the way to keep you plugged in as everything comes together.
